Menstruation, of course, is a normal and healthy function of being a woman. It is a body’s preparation for a possible pregnancy. For some women, menstruation is just a monthly routine without major problems, but for others, it may be an aggravated, sometimes painful, event. By some estimates, 90% of women experience some adverse symptoms not only during the monthly menstrual cycle but also one or two weeks before, known as PMS, Pre-Menstrual Syndrome. PMS may exhibit physical and emotional symptoms, such as:
- Headache or backache
- Swollen or tender breasts
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Bloating or gassy feeling
- Lower tolerance for noise or light
Emotional & Mental Symptoms:
- Tension or anxiety
- Mood swings
- Less interest in sex
- Irritability or hostile behavior
- Feeling tired
- Sleep problems (sleeping too much or too little)
- Appetite changes or food cravings
- Trouble with concentration or memory
- Depression, feelings of sadness, or crying spells
In addition to PMS, there is a condition known as Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). PMDD is similar to PMS but is more severe. It may cause depression, severe mood shifts, lasting anger or irritability. Experts estimate about 5 percent of women experience PMDD.
As if all that were not enough, some women experience compulsive eating before the period. Research indicates that it has a physiological component. According to a study published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, high levels of progesterone before the period play a major role in compulsive eating. Estrogen, on the other hand, appears to be associated with a decrease in appetite. Estrogen is at its highest levels only during ovulation.
A natural alternative to deal with menstrual issues is CBD, a cannabinoid of the hemp plant. CBD’s may help to maintain optimal health during the cycles, when used by itself or combined with other natural remedies as cinnamon-infused beverages, hot pads, between others.
